5 Underrated Breeds for Pet Homes

Finding the right dog breed for your lifestyle and family is an incredibly important decision.
And there are some lesser known gems that can be truly amazing pets! Some are rare, some are just underappreciated. Being a pet is a big job, and these breeds are up to the task!

  1. Field Spaniels
We hear this all the time: “we want a retriever, but not as big!”. Meet the Field Spaniel. A beautiful bird dog with a sweet, soft expression, they are mild mannered but need an active home. Their coats are easier to care for than Cocker Spaniels of either variety and they are a relatively healthy breed. These little gems are rare, but they are lovely!
  2. Smooth Collies
I have no idea why Collies are not more popular. Some people get turned off by the big coat, but they come in a smooth variety whose coat is more like a german shepherd’s. These dogs are what most pet homes want or think they are getting when they buy an australian shepherd or border collie. Sensitive, intelligent, attached to their family, trainable, silly, they’ve got it all! And in a nice moderately energetic package!
  3. Miniature Poodles
Now Mini Poodles are not a rare breed, but they are greatly underappreciated. These clever, sensitive little dogs are a fantastic size for apartment living and travel, and they are quite healthy with a long lifespan. They excel at many jobs and sports, including the most important job of being a wonderful pet. Don’t let the frou frou stereotype cloud your judgement, they’re fun, active little dogs!
  4. Cairn Terriers
These sassy, robust little dogs are highly adaptable. They’re independent enough to do well in a busy home, while still jovial and people oriented enough to make for a fun and enjoyable companion. They thrive on human companionship and are plucky little clowns!
  5. Shih Tzus
Shihs are so unappreciated. Simply put, they are fantastic little dogs. More people should have shih tzus. These delightful and lively dogs are bred specifically to be excellent pets. They love to be doted upon and excel at hanging out on your lap while you watch a movie. Their exercise needs are easily met, and they are very trainable if you use treats, praise and play. They are delightful!

I can’t stress enough the importance of buying a dog only from either a responsible breeder or ethical rescue organization. You can find our guide for finding a responsible dog breeder here!
