We had our last walk at Crescent Park today

We had our last walk in Crescent Park today.
I really enjoy this park, it's so beautiful, and it's winding trails make for really lovely dog walks.
But it's not safe for my dogs. The off leash dogs, and the aggressive, rude owners, have gotten to be too frequent.
Too often I have asked someone to leash their dog only to be yelled at, swore at, put down and threatened.
One time a dog's owner grabbed him just before he got within range of my dog, and the dog turned around and bit the owner on the hand.
Rude people happen, unfortunate dog/dog incidents happen, but they shouldn't happen all the time.
And I understand that the lack of adequate off leash spaces is a problem, and that free exercise is important for dogs' physical and mental health.
(I would note that Crescent Park is only a few blocks away from Dogwood park, which is an off leash park with trails)
But we also need to be able to trust that random dogs won't careen around the corner and startle our on leash dogs (or worse).
Reactive dogs deserve a walk in the woods.
Fearful dogs deserve a walk in the woods.
People who are physically disabled or elderly deserve to not be knocked over or jumped on.

Children deserve a safe park. (And yes we know Fluffy is a nice dog but any dog can bite)
People who are scared of dogs deserve to feel safe.
On leash dogs deserve to live their lives without being accosted by off leash dogs, which increases fear, frustration and anxiety.
I want my dogs to be confident and happy.
There are no safety guarantees in life, just as there are no guarantees in behaviour. But when the odds of an incident are so high, I can't ethically take the risk.
So we'll find other parks, other trails.
But it's a shame that good, responsible dog owners have to choose to leave because irresponsible, self centered dog owners won't.
